New
Zealand’s leading electro pop outfit STRAWPEOPLE
announce the new album NO NEW MESSAGES.
Producer, Paul Casserly has brought together his
stellar cast of vocalists, songwriters and
musicians to create a unique blend of moody
electro pop.
Co-produced by leading electronic specialist and
long time collaborator Joost Langveld, with
string arrangements by Victoria Kelly (Co-writer
on the 1996 album – “Vicarious”).
While “Vicarious” (Album Of The Year at the 1996
NZ Music Awards) featured just one vocalist (the
exceptional Fiona McDonald) No New Messages
returns to the old Strawpeople formula – a
veritable smorgasbord of vocalists, dipped in a
rich sauce of slinky beats.
So who are the singers?
Victoria Kelly returns (as well as writing, and
arranging), as does Leza Corban (the voice
behind the Strawpeople hit “Sweet Disorder”).
Also in attendance are Stephanie Tauvihi (aka
Donna on Shortland Street – she was the voice
behind “Under The Milky Way” and “Have A Little
Faith”). Then there’s Bic Runga, the beautiful
voice of rising star Anika Moa, as well as
Stacey Edwards and Michelle Crompton (both
backing singers with Greg Johnson). Casserly has
called on the technical expertise of Joost
Langveld and stellar* guitarist Chris van de
Geer to create a polished album that many are
already calling the Strawpeople’s best yet.
As for the title’s meaning Casserly remains
Cagey; “It’s kind of an anti-slogan I guess,
partly inspired by that woman on my cellphone
message service who seems to delight in telling
me when I have…No New Messages.”
NO NEW MESSAGES features the sublime lead single
SCARED OF FLYING.
